Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence & Art: An Evening at The Grocery Studios with Sasha Stiles and Jason Puccinelli

Date & Time:

Wednesday, July 26, 2023
6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Location:

The Grocery Studios

In this art and technology filled evening, attendees will be treated to artist talks, performances, and art featuring Sasha Stiles and Jason Puccinelli.

Sasha Stiles is a poet, artist and AI researcher widely recognized as a pioneer of generative literature and language art. Her multidisciplinary work fuses text and technology to explore what it means to be human in an increasingly posthuman era, and frequently leverages nontraditional tools and mediums to challenge conventional notions of authorship, readership and creativity. A recipient of the Future Art Award and nominee for the Pushcart and Forward Prizes as well as Best of the Net, Sasha will share her vision for the future of language, written in collaboration with her AI alter ego, Technelegy. Stiles will also present a public project at Seattle Art Fair 2023.

Jason Puccinelli Is a NW artist who has explored themes that question the relationships between humans and the technologies they create. Intrigued by the potentialities, fears, and controversy over AI generated artwork, Puccinelli collaborated with AI to create a series of anachronistic images with clunky robots and uncanny android like humans celebrating together over bacchanalian feasts in dining rooms straight out of an 19th century brasserie. Once images were generated through AI by the artist’s prompts, Puccinelli then edited and curated the digital images, and then completely replicated them by hand in oil paints on panel. Mimicking the mimicker, as it were.

The Grocery Studios is the private home and art studio of Demi Raven and Janet Galore on North Beacon Hill in Seattle. The studio is a creative space where they host occasional pop-up art exhibitions, workshops, lectures, music performances, and other creative activities. Demi Raven is an oil painter, literature scholar, and firmware engineer at Amazon. Janet Galore is an interdisciplinary artist, creative director, and user experience design leader at Google.
